I was lucky enough to be born in Texas…specifically East Texas, where the Deep South merges into the Old West. I grew up in the Piney Woods but can see the Great Plains from here.
Fourth Generation. Baby-boomer. Son of the Greatest Generation. Because my parents lived through the Great Depression and World War II, they taught us kids about thrift and making do and enjoying what you have. I’ve taken that attitude to the road, turning my interest in travel into a career as a freelance writer and photographer. That choice won’t make me rich, but experience trumps money in my book.
As a teenager, I listened to far-off radio stations (AM, before FM) and wondered about the world “out there.” I got a big dose of it as an exchange student for a year in Switzerland. Schwitzerdeutsch, anyone? Got my journalism degree from UT-Austin, learned photography on the job, and freelanced it ever since. Oh well, I did have a real job for a few years as editor of a couple of magazines in Tyler, where I grew up. Mostly I’ve contributed to Texas-oriented publications. I’ve dabbled in radio, writing scripts for the “Shape of Texas” public radio series about architecture and travel. I’ve done a few video projects and aim to do more, especially on historical and heritage travel topics.
